White Lung Association Makes Proposal for Asbestos Victim's
Compensation
The Board of Directors of the White Lung Association adopted the following
educational position at its national board meeting on September 19, 1999.
The White Lung Association is a non-profit, educational charity dedicated
to educating the public to the hazards of asbestos exposure. One of the
greatest hazards is misery, poverty and death created by that exposure.
The organization's members is in excess of 45,000 and is found throughout
the United States. The White Lung Association (WLA) has been relied upon
by people, corporations, local, state and federal governments and many
institutions for information of the hazards of asbestos exposure and suggestions
on how to minimize the danger of asbestos. The White Lung as often been
called on to represent the views of asbestos victims.
The White Lung Association is often referred to by governmental agencies
when they are trying to help asbestos victims and the asbestos exposed
public. The White Lung Association supports the international ban on all
asbestos mining, use and sale. The White Lung Association has been a leader
in identifying problems caused by asbestos use and offering solutions.
The WLA believes the following program would address the problems of getting
compensation through the present court system.
We believe the "Asbestos Superfund Compensation Program" is far
superior to any of the current proposals coming before the House Judiciary
Committee. The existence of this program would not only address the tragedy
of asbestos use and cover-up in the United States, it would also act to
educate the general public so that this type of occupational and environmental
tragedy will never happen again.
The White Lung Association rejects current U.S. House and U.S. Senate
legislation such as HB 1283, S 785, Oct. 12 Hyde discussion draft, Nat
Asbestos Relief and Comp Act of 1999 and the latest Chris Edley draft
(fifth in 13 days). See our web site for more details on the harmful characteristics
of these bills. (https://www.whitelung.org/)
In March, 2991 the White Lung Association published its formula for
compensation for asbestos victims. This is called the "Asbestos Victims
Superfund Compensation Program." This program was updated at the
September 19, 1999, Board of Directors meeting.
